WHY DO WE SWEAT TEST?

Adding salt (in the right amount) helps you retain more water, increases plasma volume and improves performance. Without knowing your specific loss and understanding your correct intake its still just a one size fits all approach.

So, is drinking plain water to thirst really the correct approach to hydration for athletes ? Quite simply, no.

While drinking water to thirst may be suitable for some athletes in some situations (e.g. during shorter events in cooler climates), it will be necessary for athletes with high sweat losses, salty sweat and those taking part in longer events to take on some form of electrolyte product to help replace the sodium they're losing in their sweat.

Doing a Sweat Test may seem like an odd step in preparing for an ultramarathon or Ironman. However, by working out your sweat rate and, importantly “saltiness”, we can say …
- How much fluid you are likely to lose over the course of a race

- How much salt you lose in that sweat (and as a result how much of both you need to take on board to keep the engine topped up).

HOW MUCH SALT DO YOU LOSE?

Using our calculator, you can roughly estimate your hourly salt loss.

This involves accurately weighing yourself before and after exercise along with accurate drinking water measurements.

The process …

1. Note your weight in KG right before exercise
2. Note your starting volume of drinking water before your exercise in litres
3. Note your remaining volume of drinking water after exercise in litres
4. Note your weight in KG right after exercise (be careful not to add/remove any clothing/shoes weight, don't touch your water again until after weighing)
5. Enter the values into our calculator to calculate your hourly salt loss

This will always be a rough estimate, based on an average sweat rate of 1208mg/litre.

HOW DO WE SWEAT TEST?

Stacks Image 5300
Too much salts or too little salts could affect the whole of your nutrition plan so we don't leave it to chance.

No exercise necessary. It's a non-invasive test that takes less than 15 minutes and is accurate for your specific sweet rate.

Two small electrodes are put onto your forearm. This stimulates a small patch of skin on your forearm to sweat. A sample is then drawn into a watch-like Sweat Collector and run through an analyser to tell us how much salt is on your sweat.
The quicker it fills up, the more you sweat!

What do we do with the data?

You will receive a full report of your specific salt loss along with advice and recommendations for your events.

WHAT ARE PEOPLE SAYING?

"My PH sweat test with Gary Howells was great. The test itself was quick and you get your results back immediately. He explained everything about the results and what this would mean for training and racing. The personalised hydration plan has been so useful and I now know which PH products to use and how often, based on my sodium content and sweat rate. Would highly recommend getting a sweat test with Gary to tune in your hydration 👍🏼"

"I got in contact with Gary to finally figure out my hydration strategy for the upcoming season. Up to this point I was purely guessing how much sodium I should have been taking during training and racing. I thought that because I sweat a lot, I would lose a lot of sodium, but this wasn’t the case. I was very surprised to learn that I only lose 539mg of sodium per litre of sweat. This cleared up any guess work for future races and I am now able to plan an accurate hydration strategy. I would 100% recommend going to see Gary, not only for the sweat test, but also for his knowledge and expertise around hydration and fuelling for endurance sports."

"Gary Howells at PH blew me away with his knowledge behind all the science of this product. Having the sweat test carried out at his lab gave me the opportunity to widen my appearance towards the supplement. Being an endurance athletes, nutrition plays a big part of my everyday life and now after being sweat tested it gives me the confidence to ride for 12+ hrs without worrying that my body is going to give in. Highly recommend Gary to anyone that wants to compete or just live a healthier lifestyle because PH truly has changed my life"

RADIAL SHOCK WAVE THERAPY

What is DolorClast® Radial Shock Wave Therapy?
In 1997, EMS patented the first radial shock wave device, the Swiss DolorClast®, based on the ballistic principle.
Compressed air sent to the handpiece accelerates a projectile, which strikes a fixed applicator at high speed (up to 90 km/h). The kinetic energy resulting from this movement is converted into a shock wave transmitted in a radial manner to the targeted tissues.
Shock waves delivery is short in time, usually lasting just a few minutes, thus enabling to be coupled with other therapies within the same session as recommended by the GDT. DolorClast® Shock wave protocol usually includes a total of three to five sessions, planned at a rate of one to two sessions per week with an interval of minimum 72h between them.

It is clinically proven that pressure waves, when applied to injured tissues, stimulate metabolic reactions:

  • Reduction of pain felt by nerve fibers
  • Increase of blood circulation in surrounding soft tissues
  • Beginning of healing process triggered by stem cells activation
How can shock wave therapy help in physical therapy?

  1. Compressed air accelerates a projectile which strikes a fixed applicator.
  2. The kinetic energy is converted into a shock wave delivered to the target tissue through the skin.
  3. These shock waves are conveyed radially for broad treatment areas.
  4. A shock wave begins by a compression phase. The peak pressure creates shear stress in the tissues.
  5. A tensile phase follows and generates cavitation bubbles. A high cavitation level is a result of a high amount of energy density delivered by the shock wave device.
  6. This energy stimulates metabolic reactions to the applied tissues

"Hi Gary,

Just to say a massive thank you for looking after me through my treatment. Don’t thin i would ever of trained even though competed if it wasn’t for the shockwave and your knowledge on PF.
Thanks Kate x"

"Hi Gary,
I reckon my heel is about 90% fixed thanks to you. I’m thinking that maybe three more sessions of shockwave may give me 100%
If you approve I’ll booked three sessions next month?"
